José Pacheco and The Sustainable Communities

José Pacheco (n 1951) is an educator, pedagogue born in Portugal (in the city of Porto) and advocate for a new model of teaching and democratic management in schools.

His criticism of the traditional education system is part of the criticism of the “traditional2” class that considers an obsolete content reproduction system and does not contribute to the humanization of the individual. To this end, it defends a self-managed school, without classes, without cycles, without tests or exams, without failures and without bells. The process is focused on student autonomy and protagonism.

He was one of the builders of Escola da Ponte (Porto) where he coordinated the project “Make the Bridge”, from 1976 to 2004, held at Escola da Ponte, of which he is the founder, an institution that was notable for its educational project based on student autonomy. In 2007 she moved to Brazil, where she participates in several community development projects.
